Today I'm Listening to....
(and gathering fashion inspiration from...)
It's funny because when I blog I am constantly listening to music. It's like my personal creative Zen time. I write while listening to Pandora in the backround or my Ipod but there is constantly something playing, yet I never thought to showcase what I was listening to...until now that is :)
Anyone who knows me well can tell you that my obsession with music goes hand in hand with my passion for fashion. I'm especially fond of bands and singers whose style goes beyond the typical cookie-cutter sell-outs.
So as you can imagine, I'm always on the lookout for the unconventional fashionista superstar of the bunch. The henna-covered, bindi-wearing Gwen in the 90's, the fishnet/combat-clad Shirley Manson of Garbage, and the pint-sized, pierced and pleated-skirt wearing Chibi of The Birthday Massacre, parading around the stage as she screeches into the mic, all the while looking like an angelic Catholic school girl- these are my rockstar icons.
But as art and fashion evolve, so do my tastes....
Lately I have became infatuated with Marina and the Diamonds, a cute and quirky singer from Wales. I actually came across the music video for her song,"I Am Not a Robot" on Perez Hilton of all places, but I've been on board ever since. Though in the video she isn't wearing much, I have to give her props for rocking out the be-dazzled face crystals (you know washing that off had to be a biatch!) and painting her entire upper body in black glitter paint to simulate the night sky (you just have to see it...

Sigh...she is just so adorably fierce. Her clothing choices are always care-free and vibrant. She can hap-hazardly mix leopard with neon blue and still look effortlessly bold.
She still has yet to release an EP here inthe States but she's truly an enigma in both her music and fashion sense.
Also, via Pandora, I have discovered Emilie Autumn, a vixenish gothic chick who favors classical corsets paired with shredded frocks and industrial combat boots, harlequin facepaint and an entourage of (dare I say) "Pussycat Doll"-like nymphs whom rally around her and go by the name of 'The Bloody Crumpets'. Morbid I know, yet on top of her aesthetic, which I admit is what drew me to her, her music is actually quite enticing.
She plays the electric violin, is classically trained and her haunting lyrics and music border precariously along the lines of Tori Amos and Marilyn Manson with just a hint of Trent Reznor.
What can I say, I like girls who can rock out and who dare to wear obscure fashion and completely make it their own...
Hit songs to listen to by these two extraordinary ladies:
"I Am Not a Robot" - Marina and the Diamonds
"Dead is the New Alive" - Emilie Autumn
