Target targets in on 'Gossip Girl' via Anna Sui (post finalized on 9/14/09)

So I will come out and admit it, every now and then when there is nothing on, I'll tune into 'Gossip Girl'. What I like about it isn't the witty drawn-out banter and the adult situations, it's not even the perfectly elaborate names (Blaire Waldorf, Serena Van Der Woodsen...could there be anymore syllables?!?!), no friends, it's the fact that fashion plays just as pivital a role as the actual cast does. C'mon, could Chuck Bass get by on his eye-rolling douchey looks and moody, sarcastic rants without the bowties and menswear jackets...not in this lifetime, buddy!

Anyway, the thing that makes the fashion so unattainable is the almighty price tag. Who else can just pick up an Alexander McQueen dress for a Winter Gala the day of besides these charmed ones?!?! (Well, maybe not Vanessa or Lil J, but you get the idea;)

Enter Anna Sui, creator of her own make-up line, clothing line, perfume line and all around trend-setting fashionista. Now opposite her, entering stage left, we have Target. Now, I am already a fan of Target, and as a result of this monumental match, so will throngs of t.v.-loving teeny-boppers :).

It being Fashion Week and all, I HAD to see for myself what all the hype was about, and I have to say, overall I was delightfully impressed! Anna Sui and Target opened up a pop-store located on Crosby between Spring and Broome where you could buy the line before it opened nation-wide. Unfortunately, I forgot to bring my camera in my Saturday A.M. rush to the store's location ( I know, I know... I totally dropped the ball!), but I can't explain the sheer and utter bliss that swelled up inside me when I saw the all-too familiar purple Anna Sui sign hanging in plain view as I approached the store :D

Inside, just down a staircase, girls were decked out to the nines in some of outfits, lounging around in make-shift living room sets as they modeled ensembles from each character's individual line. The walls were lined with dark, velvety curtains and armoirs and racks crammed with clothes edged the perimeter. It being the 3rd day, a lot of stuff had been picked over, but it was nice and quiet enough where I could peruse at a leisurely pace without masses of 'GG'-inspired teenagers nipping at my heels (j/k, I love the enthusiastic youth of America just for the record). Every item is priced under about $100 and even though some items (particularly those of the 'Vanessa' persuasion were, to put it delicately, like a 70's print disaster....see above) I thought the looks were edgy and fun. I even ended up purchasing a dress that I had seen photos of beforehand and shrugged off, only to find that the fit was flattering and the dress itself was well made. Once it was on, I knew I had to have it. So aside from a few questionable color/pattern/material choices I have to say that on a scale of hit or miss, Anna could have done a LOT worse. She gets my vote for a match made in fashion/consumer heaven. Gossip Girl + Target reigns supreme.

  1. She's also creating bags out of billboards up in Times Square to be sold only in Target. One of the billboards is by my gallery's artist, Michael Anderson. He's an insanely awesome collage artist.
